One of the best films of the decade, hands down. This startling, truly audacious film offers an entertaining frisson of drama, comedy, and even totally unexpected contemporary-dance-meets-Busby-Berkeley musical numbers. The story revolves around theatre veteran Claudia (legendary Spanish actress Angela Molina, whose career began with Luis Buñuel’s That Obscure Object of Desire) who decides she will not just sit around and wait for her terminal illness to take away all her joir-de-vivre. She and her long-time partner Flavio (renowned Chilean actor Alfredo Castro), who does not want to go on living without her, concoct a plan for them to arrange a medically assisted death together in Switzerland. When they call the family together to break the news, their adult children, led by daughter Violeta, certainly have some things to say. In the middle of all this strained but often hilarious family drama, Claudia and Flavio also decide to get married! The unanimous winner of the prestigious Platform Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, They Will Be Dust is all these things at once: dazzling, profound, amusing, sensitive and, in the most idiosyncratic, marvellous way, joyful. After all, in non-negotiable circumstances of mortality where you can either laugh or cry, They Will Be Dust’s witty, wise, utterly original counsel is: choose laughter.
