Billie is a strong-willed eight-year-old girl living with her father and grandmother. Believing the ballerina photo she found in the attic years ago is her mother, she proudly brings the photo to class only to be told that the woman in the photo is Karen Kain. Clever Billie takes this information and runs with it–literally running away from home to find her mother, the legendary Canadian ballet dancer. Billie is a force to be reckoned with; she won’t be told she’s wrong about her mother until her grandmother admits she lied about the photo. Finally given some true information about her mother and rightfully upset about being lied to and embarrassed in front of her schoolmates, Billie convinces her friend Sherry to take on the journey to the next town to meet her mother. Winner of Best Director at Cine Paris Film Festival, Montreal Women Film Festival, and Berlin Women Cinema Festival, Marie-Claire Marcotte creates a complicated but all too real family dynamic which pulls together many motives and parental instincts around Billie. The beautifully neon-lit magical realism combines with Maélya Boyd’s immersive performance as Billie to create the story of a broken family fitting their new pieces together.

Billie est tête forte de 8 ans qui vit avec son père et sa grand-mère. Croyant que la photo de ballerine qu’elle a trouvé au grenier il y a quelques années est celle de sa mère, elle l’apporte fièrement en classe, pour se faire dire ensuite que la femme sur la photo est Karen Kain. Billie la maline prends cette information, et ses jambes à son cou, pour aller trouver sa mère, la danseuse de ballet canadienne légendaire. Billie est une force à ne pas sous-estimer; elle n’acceptera pas de faire dire qu’elle se trompe au sujet de sa mère, jusqu’à ce que sa grand-mère lui avoue qu’elle a menti concernant la photo. Sachant enfin un peu de vérité sur sa mère, et justifiée d’être fâchée d’avoir été dupée et embarrassée devant ses camarades de classe, Billie convainc son amie de la suivre dans son périple dans la ville d’à côté pour rencontrer sa mère. Récipiendaire du prix de la meilleure réalisatrice au Cine Paris Film Festival, au Montreal Women Film Festival, et au Berlin Women Cinema Festival, Marie-Claire Marcotte crée une dynamique familiale compliquée, mais oh trop réelle, qui rassemble bien des motifs et des instincts parentaux à l’endroit de Billie. Le réalisme magique à la lumière fluo se combine à la prestation immersive de Maélya Boyd dans le rôle de Billie pour créer l’histoire d’une famille brisée qui assemble de nouveaux morceaux.
