A popular and critical hit in the Un Certain Regard selection at Cannes 2024, Boris Lojkine’s latest is a vividly realized tale of contemporary global migration. Souleymane has recently arrived in Paris from Guinea, seeking asylum. Undocumented, he sleeps in homeless shelters and toils as a delivery biker using a false account, paying a substantial slice of his earnings to the real owner, his boss. It is a demanding, exhausting, risky existence, in the midst of which he must prepare for a crucial interview with the French government agency that deals with immigrant issues. Paying a broker to help him get his papers in order and to advise him on the process, Souleymane is told his actual asylum story is not dramatic enough and is given a script to memorize about his past. Uncomfortable about lying but desperate to succeed, Souleymane commits this overheated fictional persecution narrative to memory. But will he be convincing enough? Abou Sangaré’s performance as Souleymane is extraordinary, winning him the Un Certain Regard Best Actor prize at Cannes. As Variety’s Jessica Kiang rightly observes, “First-time actor Abou Sangare is a revelation in Boris Lojkine's pulse-quickening portrait of an undocumented Guinean delivery biker in Paris.”

Un succès populaire et déterminant de la sélection Un Certain Regard à Cannes en 2024, le plus récent film de Boris Lojkine est une histoire réalisée avec vividité sur la migration mondiale contemporaine. Souleymane est récemment arrivé à Paris depuis la Guinée, cherchant l’asile. Sans papiers, il dort dans des refuges pour sans-abris et besogne comme livreur à vélo sous un faux compte, payant une part importante de son salaire au vrai propriétaire, son patron. C’est une existence exigeante, exténuante et risquée, au milieu de laquelle il doit se préparer à une entrevue avec une agence du gouvernement français qui s’occupe des cas des immigrants. Il paie un intermédiaire pour l’aider à obtenir et mettre à jour ses documents, et le conseiller sur le processus, mais Souleymane se fait dire que sa vraie histoire d’asile n’est pas assez dramatique et reçoit un script à apprendre par cœur sur son passé. Mal à l’aise de mentir, mais voulant réussir à tout prix, Souleymane mémorise cette fiction de persécution exagérée. Mais saura-t-il être assez convaincant? La prestation d’Abou Sangaré dans le rôle de Souleymane est extraordinaire et lui a valu le prix du meilleur acteur de la sélection Un Certain Regard à Cannes. Comme l’observe astucieusement Jessica Kiang de Variety, « Dans son premier rôle, Abou Sangaré est une révélation dans le portrait angoissant de Boris Lojkine d’un livreur à vélo guinéen sans papiers à Paris. »
