Based on Timothy Findley's critically acclaimed, Governor General's award-winning 1977 novel, The Wars is one of this country's most prestigious film productions. With a screenplay by Findley and a musical score by none other than the incomparable Glenn Gould, the film also boasts an extraordinary cast, including Brent Carver, Martha Henry, William Hutt, Ann-Marie MacDonald, and Jackie Burroughs. The film centres on 19 year-old Robert Ross (Carver), the over-protected son of an upper-class Rosedale family who enlists to serve in the Canadian Army during World War I. As with the novel's inventive narrative structure, the film blends powerful scenes set during the tumult of war with sequences depicting Robert's formative experiences from childhood that led him to enlist, including his complicated relationships with his sister and parents. An extraordinary achievement in Canadian filmmaking, this restored version of The Wars reveals its incredible artistry and secures its place of distinction in the history of our national cinema.
