This remarkable and very timely debut feature from talented writer-director Nora El Hourch brilliantly combines a contemporary coming-of-age tale with a dramatic exploration of the complex role of social media in the lives of its three teenage protagonists. Amina, Djeneba, and Zineb, inseparable since childhood, are now fifteen and, in a world of selfies, #MeToo, and peer pressures see their friendship challenged. When one of them is subject to unwanted sexual advances by a local boy, they decide to create a scenario where they can record his next attempt and expose him as a danger. When Amina posts this video on social media, however, their friendship is suddenly shaken when issues of race, class, gender politics, and cultural privilege are raised in relation to the decision to post. Will this very special friendship survive? A perceptive drama, Sisterhood is never simple or reductive and offers a compelling portrait of the new personal and social challenges faced by young women in the technocentric 21st century.

Ce premier long métrage des plus à point de la talentueuse scénariste-réalisatrice Nora El Hourch combine brillamment un conte contemporain de croissance personnelle avec une exploration dramatique du rôle complexe des médias sociaux dans la vie de ses trois protagonistes adolescentes. Amina, Djeneba et Zineb, inséparables depuis l’enfance, ont maintenant quinze ans et, dans un monde d’autoportraits, de #MoiAussi, et de pression des pairs, voient leur amitié mise à l’épreuve. Lorsque l’une d’entre elles reçoit des avances sexuelles non désirées par un garçon du coin, elles décident de créer un scenario où elles peuvent filmer sa prochaine tentative et l’exposer comme étant un danger. Or, lorsqu’Amina publie cette vidéo sur les médias sociaux, leur amitié est soudainement secouée quand des questions de race, de classe, de politiques sur le genre et de privilège culturel sont soulevées en lien avec la décision de publier. Cette amitié très spéciale survivra-t-elle? Un drame perceptif, Sisterhood n’est jamais simple ou réducteur, et il offre un portrait prenant des nouveaux défis personnels et sociaux auxquels les jeunes femmes d’aujourd’hui sont confrontées.
