Burkinabée writer-director Apolline Traoré’s bold fifth feature casts its ferocious gaze at the ongoing lawlessness and violence against women in the Sahel region of Northern Africa. The story revolves around the indomitable figure of Sira, a woman forced to fight for her life against overwhelming odds. We first meet the young bride-to-be Sira crossing the desert to be with her betrothed, Jean Sidi. Suddenly, armed extremists attack their nomadic village. Abducted, brutalized, raped, and left to die, the determined Sira starts out on a long journey alone across the dry, punishing landscape to return to her community. As fate will have it, though, her path leads her right into the assailants’ camp where other women are being held as slaves. Refusing to surrender to circumstances, she decides to remain near the camp, living off the land and out of sight, preparing for her moment to strike back. An extraordinary story of strength and hope, Traoré’s powerful film captured the Panorama Audience Award at the Berlinale 2023, and the Silver Stallion of Yennenga prize at Fespaco 2023.

L’audacieux cinquième long métrage de la scénariste-réalisatrice burkinabè Apolline Traoré jette son regard féroce sur l’anarchie et la violence continues envers les femmes dans la région du Sahel en Afrique du Nord. L’histoire porte sur la figure indomptable de Sira, une femme forcée de se battre pour sa vie contre des obstacles énormes. Nous rencontrons d’abord la jeune future mariée alors qu’elle traverse le désert pour aller retrouver son fiancé, Jean Sidi. Soudainement, des extrémistes armés attaquent leur village nomade. Enlevée, brutalisée, violée et laissée pour morte, Sira, la déterminée, entame un long trajet seule dans ce paysage aride et sans répits afin de retourner dans sa communauté. Cependant, le sort a voulu que son chemin la mène droit dans le camp des assaillants où d’autres femmes sont retenues comme esclaves. Refusant de se soumettre aux circonstances, elle décide de rester près du camp, vivant de la terre et hors de la vue et préparant le moment de sa vengeance. Une histoire extraordinaire de force et d’espoir, le film puissant et de Traoré s’est mérité le prix Panorama Audience au Berlinale de 2023, et le prix de l’Étalon d’argent de Yennenga au FESPACO de 2023.
