In his first feature film since 2019’s Guest of Honour, internationally renowned, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Atom Egoyan returns with Seven Veils, a multi-layered drama involving the mounting of the fabled Richard Strauss opera, Salome. When a relatively inexperienced director named Jeanine (Amanda Seyfried) is bequeathed the job of remounting a Canadian Opera Company production of Salome after the death of its creator, who was also her mentor, she must confront her shadowy personal history with the deceased man, the opera itself, and her own family history. In many ways out of her depth, Jeanine struggles to explain her vision to the opera company stars and to those working behind the scenes. As Jeanine’s personal and professional obsessions blur, the production itself may be jeopardized. Egoyan’s incorporation of the actual performance of the opera (which he directed for the Canadian Opera Company) into the backstage relationships and hidden agendas is breathtaking, as the opera’s dark narrative eerily reflects on what is happening in Jeanine’s life and the lives of others around her. Featuring an astonishing performance by Amanda Seyfried, Seven Veils is a haunting examination of memory, trauma, art, and identity. Stunning.

On a hot summer day, an overwhelmed mother clashes with her eldest child. As the afternoon heat turns oppressive, time seems to move entirely differently for each person.
Impeccably crafting a tension that only continues to build, Heat Spell is a haunting, slow-burn depiction of every parent’s worst nightmare.
