Once a brilliant English teacher with a promising career, Geoffrey’s life was turned upside down by a homicide conviction and seven years in prison. Upon his release, he is returned to the village Shimoni (which translates to ‘the pit’) where he grew up to make amends. Forbidden from teaching, he does menial tasks on a local farm. While the villagers gossip incessantly about him, he also has regular visits from the village priest, who wants Geoffrey to redeem his past in various ways, including a forced meeting with his victim’s family. All the while, his memories torment him as he struggles to rebuild his life and escape the nightmares of both his sleeping and waking existence. A tale of crime and punishment, of trauma and redemption, former editor turned writer-director Angela Wanjiku Wamai’s film is a potent psychological drama of a man in search of himself in the face of a disastrous past and an uncertain future. Featured as part of TIFF’s ‘Discovery’ section, Shimoni is a startling debut feature film from a brave new voice in contemporary African cinema.

Autrefois un brillant enseignant d’anglais avec une carrière prometteuse, Geoffrey a vu sa vie chamboulée par une conviction d’homicide et sept ans en prison. À sa sortie, il revient au Shimoni (qui se traduit par « la fosse ») où il a grandi, afin de réparer ses torts. Comme il lui est interdit d’enseigner, il fait du travail subalterne sur une ferme locale. En plus des commérages constants des villageois à son sujet, il reçoit également souvent la visite du prêtre du village, qui veut que Geoffrey rachète son passé de différentes façons, dont par une rencontre forcée avec la famille de sa victime. Tout ce temps, ses souvenirs le tourmentent tandis qu’il s’efforce de rebâtir sa vie et d’échapper aux cauchemars qui l’accablent tant la nuit que le jour. Une histoire de crime et de punition, de traumatisme et de rédemption, le film de l’ancienne monteuse devenue scénariste-réalisatrice, Angela Wanjiku Wamai, est un puissant drame psychologique à propos d’un homme à la recherche de lui-même devant un passé désastreux et un avenir incertain.
