Based on a true story, acclaimed filmmaker (Governor General Media Arts Award winner and one of the CFI’s ‘Canadian Masters’) William D. MacGillivray’s latest is a moving family drama about life, death, and love. Diagnosed with cancer, forty-year-old Joe leaves his former peripatetic lifestyle in Idaho and returns home to coastal Newfoundland. Welcomed back into his childhood home where his older sister Jenny now lives with husband Phil and teenage daughter Maggie, Joe begins to reconsider the wandering life he has led. As the family tends to Joe’s needs, they grow closer together and Joe himself starts to find new meaning in a life that until now thought he had wasted. Understated and finely observed, MacGillivray’s powerful film is a deeply moving tale of redemption sprinkled with wry humour. In its intimate drama and its poetic use of the rugged Atlantic Ocean coastline of MacGillivray’s native Newfoundland, Under The Weather is a paean to human love, compassion, and hope. IFFO 2022 is proud to present its world premiere on the big screen!
