Medusa depicts a gang of ultra right wing young women and vigilante enforcers who beat the town sinners into conversion, suppressing their desires and lust until they can’t.
Anita Rocha da Silveira’s second feature draws on the rise of conservatism in Brazil, weaving the tensions of religious fanaticism, misogyny and its effects on young people into a highly stylized, genre-hopping film. Influenced by the works of Dario Argento and David Lynch, the film plays with bold colours and unapologetic contrasts, combining elements of mythology and horror with satire. Medusa’s musical and choreographed movements teeter between building tension, driving frustration, and exploring euphoria, until it all ruptures with a scream.
The Rio de Janeiro native’s film was part of the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight and part of the Official Selection at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival.
